The BigBlue View Spring 2010

Green is the new Blue
So we've entered another year, indeed another decade, spring is on its way and the media reports that the UK is climbing out of recession and the green shoots of economic recovery are emerging.

This issue of the Big Blue Stuff is given over to Big Green Stuff as we update you on how we believe 'green' will be essential in life and business for the coming decades.

We state in our creed; "an environment should be better for us having been there; be it a business or the beach".

www.bigbluestuff.com/creed/. Our Intent is to ensure that when we do business or enable others to do better business, we are mindful of the environment whether that be a business or nature.

For the past two years BigBlueStuff has been fortunate to have been central to two awesome projects being driven by The Crown Estate that have the environment as their reason for being and we hope showcase great 'green' business.

Round 3 Off Shore Wind Project - Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband announced the award of nine contracts to develop renewable energy zones around the UK in early January. BigBlueStuff facilitated the definition and delivery of this ground breaking project as well as establishing a project team capable of managing the delivery of £180 billion of assets, ultimately producing 25% of the UK's energy needs via renewable sources by 2020.

MaRS - A £4m Marine Resource System which will enable The Crown Estate to proactively plan the sustainable use of UK waters and seabed.

The first system of its kind worldwide MaRS integrates over 500 marine data layers to support evidence based decision making for UK waters. The system, now in operation is also being reviewed by government departments from the UK, Norway and the US as a potential tool integral to managing the conflicting uses of the worlds precious marine resources.

On our journey we have also met some inspired individuals and organisations who are searching for ways to make 'green' good business.

We are currently networking for a colleague who is looking for investment for a green propulsion technology for ocean going tankers and cargo transporters.

Greenwave aims to cut the global shipping fuel emissions by up to 20% by using a wind assisted propulsion device. www.greenwave.org.uk/wasp.html

Time to act

Apparently it's a psychological truism that most people will over-estimate what they can do in a year and under-estimate what they can achieve in a decade.

Ten years seems like a long time to most of us when viewed from the starting line, but in the space of ten years we will have kids, kids will change schools, we'll lose friends, make some new ones, we will change jobs, even careers. Ten years seems like a long time.
So we think we're at the stage where the green shoots of recovery need to grow into something rich and sustainable. How do we ensure that everyone thinks Green, to ensure a better world for our children's children's children?

Big Blue Stuff is committed to enabling organisations big or small to do better business. How can we help you find the next right question to the answers you already have?
Ten things we believe will help you as you journey through the next decade;
1) Don't stop at the first right answer. The next right answer may be round the metaphorical corner.
2) Constantly try and put yourself in the place of most potential.
3) Readiness is the key to achieving anything.
4) Gaining clarity on what you really want aids mobility.
5) Check that your organisation is doing what it was set up to do (and if it's not what is it doing?)
6) Come from a place of abundance, not fear.
7) Be mindful of the truth; People deliver projects, not process's
8) Your organisation is an idea with people added. Let then help you
9) Keep checking you intent and know it's more than good intentions that shape the world
10) Finally try and remember, 'hope is not a strategy for success'. You have to participate in creating the future.Gaining clarity on what you really want aids mobility.
